Foss is the pianist on Munch's set of the Brandenburg Concerti - of course, he plays only in No. 5. One of my favorite versions, by the way.

How very rude was the person coughing and sneezing over and over again. He really should have had the courtesy to leave the concert hall. Were the ushers on strike?

Mike Wallace is not fit for the task of interviewing Horowitz- it's none of his business what Vladimir gets paid- he can't take the conversation anywhere-

Thanks for this video, my grandfather Jaap Stotijn played first oboe in these concerts. Toscanini invited him to the orchestra. He certainly was not Jewish but one of the great oboïsts of that era.

I knew Stokowski conducted America premieres of Carl Orff's Trionfo di Afrodite (Houston, 2 April 1956) and the third completed version of Ein Sommernachtstraum (19 July 1956, Empire State Music Festival), but I had no idea Nänie und Dithyrambe had been performed in America at all! I'm so grateful for another recording of this highly underrated setting of Friedrich Schiller-the tempo in "Dithyrambe" is wild! Edit: Too bad he can't be bothered with all three strophes....

And, the performance itself sounds as though Wilhelm Furtwängler conducting Saint Cecilia Orchestra on September 9th, 1948 in Edinburgh Festival!!! Its intensity and concentration and total devotion to the music!!!

Very fine. One stylistic thing that bothers me-- there was a time when people realized that Bach's dotted rhythms didn't have to be exactly 3:1. This was taken as an injunction to overdot, which these guys all do in the last movement. But another solution is to make the 16th note more of a triplet, so it would mesh with what comes underneath. You can still emphasize each entry without making an artificial hiccup. Oh, well. That was 60 years ago, and tastes change.

When I read in the newspaper back in 1982 that Rubinstein had died, it was like the end of the world for me. I missed his final performance in Rome -- of his farewell tour of Europe -- because the tickets sold out too quickly. But thanks to technology, we have what Richard Strauß called "Death and Transfiguration". Rubinstein, Rudolf Serkin, and Wilhelm Kempff were the inspiration of my younger years. After hearing Serkin perform Beethoven in 1971, I returned to playing the piano. After decades away, I returned again at age 69. At 72, I spend the days of my retirement playing mostly Beethoven, Mozart, & Brahms. Living alone is a blessing. I live with the music I am practicing and mastering -- finally, in old age, when I can focus on music, and not on earning a living.
